Abstract
Starting with the intriguing question of how the concept of place, as the dimension within which humans exist, is both constitutive of our existence and yet extends beyond our grasp, this article aims to explore the dimension of depth that cannot be reduced to the everyday dimension of human life. It references the thoughts of the Japanese modern philosopher Kitaro Nishida. The discussion revolves around how Nishida’s understanding of the dimension of depth, based on his experience of reality, sheds light on the mode of human existence amidst the general instability of the world. The article endeavors to develop a mode of thinking about the world that reconciles these two contradictory dimensions of reality and concludes with a thought experiment. This experiment seeks to foster the development of such thought in relation to the possibility of the open place that welcomes humans, irrespective of where and how they find themselves displaced.
